On June 30, 2008, President
Bush announced
the H.R. 2642, the Supplemental
Appropriations Act, 2008.
It states, in part, "So I'm pleased that the bill I sign today
includes an expansion of the GI Bill. This legislation will make
it easier for our troops to transfer unused education benefits
to their spouses and children. It will help us to recruit and
reward the best military on the face of the Earth. It will help
us to meet our responsibilities to those who support our troops
every day -- America's great military families."

Few veterans and
their families are aware of the hazard that asbestos poses.
Asbestos exposures were common aboard naval vessels and
other military installations. Exposure has been conclusively
linked to
mesothelioma, a rare cancer and aggressive cancer.
Options for
mesothelioma treatmentare limited so any veteran or
family member who believes they have been exposed should
consult with their physician about their asbestos history.
Scams targeting military members and their
families are on the rise. This is mainly due to the fact
that although most of us aren't wealthy, we do have a steady
income. Additionally, constant deployments brings extra
income, which these dishonest people are after. Some
common scams include predatory lending such as payday loans, car
title loans and advance-fee loans, investments with extremely
high front-end fees, insurance companies who use illegal
tactics to coerce military members into buying their insurance,
home based business scams, pyramid schemes, and identity theft.
RED CROSS SCAM - One of the most recent
identity theft scams targets families of deployed soldiers.
Someone calls claiming to be with the Red Cross, tells you your
soldier has been injured and needs to be transported to a
hospital in Germany. They ask for his social security
number and date of birth in order to allow for treatment and
transport. Families should never give personal information
out to unknown persons over the phone.
Kiplinger Magazine, has a
great article on this topic which includes ideas on how to
protect yourself and find better deals.
